  • 1Identify the steps needed to prepare a healthy nursery bed for seed nursing in a small garden
  • 2Show learners two soil samples — one dark and fertile, one pale and sandy — ask: Which soil is better for growing seeds and why?
  • STEPS TO PREPARE NURSERY BEDS AND NURSE SEEDS
  • 1Draw a nursery bed on the chalkboard and label four key steps: (1) Clear the ground, (2) Mix fertile soil with compost, (3) Fill bags or beds to 10 cm depth, (4) Water gently. Use the textbook diagram to confirm each step. Ask: Which step comes first and why?
  • 2Demonstrate filling a nursery bag with fertile soil using a spoon, showing correct depth — fill slowly while counting to 10 so learners see how deep is enough. Learners watch and count aloud with you. Use Textbook during the task.
  • 3Learners sketch the four steps in their exercise books using simple drawings (no colour needed). Call on a learner who finished to show their drawing and explain one step to the class
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Learners stand and mime the action of preparing a nursery bed in order — clearing, mixing, filling, watering — while you clap the rhythm
  • 2Ask: If Kwame prepared his nursery bed but forgot to water it, what would happen to his seedlings? Learners whisper answer to their partner first, then one pair shares aloud
Exercise
  • 1Draw a nursery bed with three bags and label what goes into each bag: fertile soil, compost, and water — write the correct order and explain why each material matters in their exercise books.
