  • 1Learners will recall the basic stages of preparing a nursery bed and nursing seeds for vegetable gardening in Ghana
  • 2Show learners a picture of a healthy vegetable garden with seedlings and ask: What do you see growing here? Learners raise hands to name the vegetables (pepper, lettuce, okro, cabbage)
  • STEPS FOR PREPARING A NURSERY BED AND NURSING SEEDS
  • 1Write on chalkboard: (1) Loosen soil with a hoe, (2) Mix in compost or manure, (3) Fill nursery bags or bed with fertile soil, (4) Plant seeds at correct depth, (5) Water gently. Learners copy into exercise books and repeat chorally three times
  • 2Using the textbook diagram of seed depth, explain: pepper seeds go 0.5 cm deep, okro 2 cm deep. Ask: Why do different seeds go to different depths? Learners discuss with their partner and share one reason with the class (e.g., big seeds need deeper holes)
  • 3Demonstrate on the chalkboard using a simple drawing: show how to fill a nursery bag with soil, mark the correct depth for a pepper seed with your finger, and show the watering can. Ask learners to mime watering seedlings gently without drowning them
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Display three pictures of nursery beds (one with dry soil, one with waterlogged soil, one with healthy seedlings) on chalkboard. Ask: Which nursery bed is ready for seeds? Why? Learners vote by thumbs up/down
  • 2Learners work in pairs: one explains one step of nursery bed preparation to their partner; they switch roles for a second step
Exercise
  • 1Kofi is preparing a nursery bed at home to grow lettuce. In your exercise book, list the three most important things Kofi must do before planting his lettuce seeds
