Content Standard & Indicator

B6.2.2.1.1
Demonstrate understanding of algebraic expressions 1) Sum of 8 and s 3) 9 times the sum of 8 and q 5) One-sixth of n is added to the product of 9 and y algebraic expressions.
CORE Demonstrate understanding of algebraic expressions as mathematical phrases that can multiply, and divide).
Learners will write algebraic expressions from word problems and use them to solve real-world Ghanaian situations involving multiplication, division, and substitution.

  • 1Recall what variables and algebraic expressions are by identifying them in familiar Ghanaian market situations
  • 2Show learners 3 written phrases: 'Ama bought m packs of waakye at GH₵8 each', 'The total cost is 8m', and 'Kofi has 5 more than Yaw's n mangoes.' Ask: Which parts are numbers, which are letters, and what might the letters mean?
  • WRITING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS FROM WORD PROBLEMS
  • 1Write this word problem on the board using your ruler and graph board: 'Yakubu sells chichinga at his chop bar. He sells c portions each day and makes GH₵12 profit per portion. Write an expression for his daily profit.' Model the answer step by step: identify the numbers (12), identify the variable (c), write 12c. Learners copy into their exercise books and explain to their partner what each symbol means
  • 2Give learners 4 word problems from the textbook (page reference from Teachers Resource Pack): (1) 'Sena has s oranges. She gives away 7. Write the expression for how many she has left.' (2) 'A rectangle has length 6 and width w. Write the expression for its perimeter.' (3) 'Divide 24 cedi equally among p people. Write the expression.' (4) 'Three times the sum of 9 and d.' Learners work in pairs using their exercise books to write each expression, then a volunteer from each successful pair comes to the board to write one answer
  • 3Struggling learners: provide only problems (1) and (2) with number clues highlighted in the textbook. Fast finishers: create their own market scenario (e.g., yam seller at Makola Market) and write two expressions with different operations.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Calculator
  • 4Ruler and graph board
  • 1Learners stand up and form a line by complexity: simplest expression they wrote today on one end, most complex on the other. Ask: Why did you choose that order?
  • 2Call on a learner who struggled in the starter to read one of their written expressions aloud. Class gives a thumbs-up if correct
Exercise
  • 1Write this question in their exercise books: 'Adwoa buys n pens at GH₵2.50 each and 3 notebooks at GH₵1.50 each. Write the total algebraic expression for her spending. If n = 8, how much does she spend in total?' Learners must show both the expression and the final answer using a calculator if needed
