  • 1Recall the names and purposes of at least two different search engines used to find information on the internet
  • 2Ask learners: Which websites do you use when you want to find information on the internet? Invite volunteers to name any search engines they know and write them on the board (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.)
  • COMPARING SEARCH RESULTS FROM TWO SEARCH ENGINES
  • 1Using the computer, projector, and internet connection, open Google in the web browser. Type the search query 'cocoa farming in Ghana' in the search box and display the first five results on the projector. Ask learners to observe and note down the website names and titles they see. Then open Yahoo in a new tab, type the same search query 'cocoa farming in Ghana', and display its first five results. Ask: Are the results the same or different? Which search engine showed results that are easier to understand?
  • 2Divide learners into pairs. Provide each pair with a second search query: 'how to make jollof rice'. Pairs will use the Computer/Laptop to search this query on both Google and Yahoo (or take turns at one machine while others record on paper). Learners write down three results from each search engine and circle any results that appear on both engines. Call on one representative from three different pairs to share whether their results were the same or different
  • 3Struggling learners: provide a prepared worksheet with the search queries already written and boxes to tick 'Google' or 'Yahoo' for each result found. Fast finishers: ask them to try a third search engine (Bing) and compare all three results.
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3Internet connection
  • 4Web browser (Google Chrome or Firefox)
  • 5Textbook
  • 1Learners gather and view the projector showing both Google and Yahoo homepages side by side. Ask: What is one difference you noticed between the two search engines? Invite four learners to share one difference each (e.g. layout, colours, button positions)
  • 2Ask the class chorally: If you search for 'Makola Market Accra' on Google and Yahoo, will you get exactly the same results? Learners respond together: No. Confirm that different search engines find and show information in different ways
Exercise
  • 1Open a computer or use the textbook example. Search the term 'Kumasi festivals' on two different search engines. Write down two website names from Google's results and two from Yahoo's results. Circle any websites that appear in both search engines in their exercise books.
