  • 1Recall prior knowledge of web browsers and search engines used in daily life
  • 2Ask learners: Name two search engines you have used on a mobile phone or computer. Invite volunteers to share answers chorally (Google, Bing, Yahoo). Write responses on the board
  • UNDERSTANDING EFFECTIVE SEARCH TECHNIQUES IN A WEB BROWSER
  • 1Open Google on the projector. Type 'Ghana cocoa farms' and show the search results. Ask: How many results appeared? Explain: When we use exact phrases with correct spelling, the search engine finds more accurate pages. Type the same search again but misspell 'cocoa' as 'coco'—show fewer results. Learners observe the difference
  • 2Distribute the Textbook and display page on Boolean operators using the Internet connection. Read aloud: Using AND means both words must appear; OR means either word can appear; NOT removes unwanted words. Demonstrate on the projector: Search 'Ghana AND cocoa' (results show both), then 'cocoa OR chocolate' (results show either). Ask: Which search gave more specific results about Ghanaian cocoa farming?
  • 3Struggling learners: work in pairs with a Computer to try one guided search (Ghana cocoa) while stronger learners attempt two searches independently.

  • 1Learners work in pairs and complete one search on the Computer using the phrase 'Accra market traders' with exact spelling. Partners check the first three results and count how many mention markets. A representative from two pairs shares their count with the class
  • 2Ask: If Ama wants to find information about yam farming but NOT cassava, which word should she add to her search? Show that typing 'yam farming NOT cassava' narrows results. Learners thumbs up if they understand why this is useful
Exercise
  • 1Write one sentence: You want to search for information about trotro fares in Kumasi. Write the exact search phrase you would type into Google, using either AND or NOT to make the search more effective. Explain in one sentence why your phrase will find better results in their exercise books.
