  • 1Identify the physical properties of air that learners can observe in their environment
  • 2Ask learners: What do you feel on your face when the classroom door opens? What happens to a flag or cloth when the wind blows? Allow three learners to share their answers aloud
  • DEMONSTRATING THE PROPERTIES OF AIR
  • 1Using the chalkboard, draw a simple table with three columns: Property, What We See, What It Means. Demonstrate air has mass by blowing up two identical balloons to the same size and hanging them from a rod balanced on your finger—the one with more air sinks slightly. Ask learners to observe and copy the table into their exercise books as you label the first row: Air has mass. Let learners work in pairs to keep all learners involved.
  • 2Place a clear plastic cup upside down into a bucket of water and push it straight down—the cup does not fill with water because air occupies space inside. Ask learners in pairs to predict what will happen if you tilt the cup slightly, then observe as bubbles escape and water enters. Learners record in their exercise books: Air occupies space
  • 3Struggling learners: draw simple pictures in their exercise book instead of writing full sentences. Fast finishers: list one more property of air (e.g. it is made of gases) based on the textbook page 45. Use pair or group support to manage the large class.

  • 1Call on one representative from each pair to stand and state one property of air they observed in the demonstrations. Class responds with thumbs up if they agree
  • 2Ask learners to hold up their exercise books and show their completed table to the person next to them. Ask a girl who has not yet contributed to name one property of air from memory
Exercise
  • 1In your exercise book, write or draw two ways that air shows it has mass or occupies space. Use an example from the classroom (e.g. wind pushing a door, a balloon floating)
