  • 1Recall the definition of nouns and identify concrete nouns in a given sentence
  • 2Write on the board: 'Ama bought a book at Makola Market.' Ask learners to find the nouns and whisper them to their partner. Invite one representative from each group to share their answer aloud
  • UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACT NOUNS THROUGH CONTRAST
  • 1Write these noun pairs on the board: 'happiness and table', 'courage and house', 'friendship and ball'. Read the Textbook definition of abstract nouns aloud. Ask learners to sort the pairs into 'things you can touch' and 'things you can only feel'. Use the Dictionary to check the meaning of 'happiness' and 'courage' together as a class
  • 2Provide each pair of learners with Reading materials containing a short paragraph about Kofi's bravery during a school competition. Ask pairs to highlight or underline any abstract nouns using the definitions from the board. Call on one pair to share which abstract nouns they found and why those words are abstract
  • 3Struggling learners: work with the board list of five abstract nouns only (happiness, courage, friendship, honesty, respect) and match each to a simple picture or definition card. Use pair or group support to manage the large class.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Dictionary
  • 3Reading materials
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Ask learners to stand if their sentence contains an abstract noun. Read aloud: 'Ama showed kindness to a homeless person.' Learners identify 'kindness' chorally and explain why it is abstract
  • 2Pair learners and ask them to whisper one abstract noun to their partner. Partners then create a sentence using that abstract noun in their Exercise book. Invite three pairs to read their sentences aloud
Exercise
  • 1Write in your Exercise book: 'Identify the abstract noun in this sentence: Yakubu's success at the Techiman Market was due to his hard work and determination.' Explain why it is an abstract noun
