Identify and use collective nouns to refer to a group of objects and people; Have learners read sentences containing collective nouns e.g. a team of players, a school of fish, a swarm of bees, a troop of monkeys, a flock of sheep, a bunch of keys.; Explain to learners that collective nouns behave like singular nouns. Therefore, they are used with singular verbs.; Provide collective nouns and their groups for learners to identify. Let them form sentences using the collective nouns.

  • 1Recall common collective nouns and identify what groups they represent
  • 2Display on the board: 'a team of players, a school of fish, a flock of sheep'. Ask learners: Which word in each phrase tells us it is a group? Learners whisper answers to their partner, then raise hands to share
  • UNDERSTANDING COLLECTIVE NOUNS AND SINGULAR VERB AGREEMENT
  • 1Write on the board: 'A team of players IS ready. A flock of sheep IS grazing.' Read aloud with learners chorally repeating each sentence twice. Explain: The collective noun (team, flock) is ONE group, so we use the singular verb IS, not ARE. Open the Textbook to the section on collective nouns and point out three more examples: a troop of monkeys, a bunch of keys, a swarm of bees. Ask learners to identify the collective noun and the group in each example
  • 2Provide learners with a prepared list of collective nouns written on the board or on a handout: team, school, flock, troop, swarm, bunch, herd, colony. Pair learners and ask each pair to choose one collective noun and form ONE sentence using it with a singular verb (IS or WAS). A volunteer from each pair writes their sentence on the board. Monitor pronunciation and verb agreement as pairs share aloud
  • 3Struggling learners: provide a sentence frame (A ____ of ____ IS ____) and offer the group word; fast finishers create a second sentence with a different collective noun.

  • 1Call on three pairs to read their sentences aloud while the class listens for the collective noun and checks that the verb IS correct. Learners give a thumbs up if the sentence is correct, thumbs down if not
  • 2Ask the class: Why do we use IS instead of ARE with a collective noun? Select a learner to explain that a collective noun names ONE group even though it has many members. Learners repeat the explanation chorally
Exercise
  • 1Write three collective nouns on the board: a bunch of grapes, a colony of ants, a herd of cattle. Learners choose one and write one sentence using it with the correct singular verb (IS or WAS) in their exercise books. Collect and check for accuracy
