1. MOTOR SKILL AND MOVEMENT PATTERNS
1. LOCOMOTOR, MANIPULATIVE AND RHYTHMIC SKILLS

Content Standard & Indicator

B2.1.1.1.1
Demonstrate competence in the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities (games, athletics, gymnastics and dance).
Travel (move) in straight, curved, and zigzag pathways, using the following locomotor movements: walking, running, leaping, jumping, and skipping.
Learners will travel in straight, curved, and zigzag pathways using walking, running, leaping, jumping, and skipping movements.

  • 1Identify the three types of pathways (straight, curved, and zigzag) by name and describe how the body moves through each one
  • 2Ask learners: What different ways can you move from one end of the hall to the other? Call on volunteers to demonstrate walking, running, and skipping in place while others observe
  • MOVING THROUGH STRAIGHT, CURVED, AND ZIGZAG PATHWAYS
  • 1Use the flash card to show learners large pictures of a straight road, a curved river, and a zigzag lightning bolt. Place three marked pathways on the floor using tape: one straight line, one curved semicircle, and one zigzag pattern. Demonstrate walking slowly along the straight pathway, then running along the curved pathway, saying aloud: I am walking straight, now I am running in a curve. Ask learners to repeat these movements one at a time along each pathway
  • 2Divide learners into three groups. Each group moves through all three pathways using different locomotor movements: Group 1 walks through all three; Group 2 runs through all three; Group 3 jumps and skips through all three. Play the video of correct pathway travel to show learners the expected standard before they begin. After each group completes their pathway, ask them: Which pathway was easiest? Which needed more balance? Learners discuss with their partner and share one answer per group
  • 3Struggling learners: walk only along the straight pathway and the curved pathway with teacher guidance; pair them with a confident peer who models the movement first.
  • 1video (demonstrating correct pathway travel and locomotor movements)
  • 2flash card (pictures of straight road, curved river, zigzag lightning)
  • 3tape or rope
  • 4open hall or playground space
  • 1Call out pathway names in random order (straight, curved, zigzag) and learners make the shape with their arms in the air and mime walking, running, or skipping without moving their feet. Repeat three times with different movements
  • 2Ask learners to show you with their thumb and two fingers the shape of each pathway: thumb up for straight, index and middle crossed for curved, two fingers zigzagging for zigzag. Confirm correct responses by nodding and saying: Correct, Ama and Kofi!
Exercise
  • 1Arrange three pathways on the floor. Tell learners: You will walk the straight pathway, run the curved pathway, and skip the zigzag pathway. Observe each learner as they travel through all three pathways and mark whether they successfully completed each one using their appropriate locomotor movement in their exercise books.
