  • 1Recall what learners already know about software used to create printed materials and posters
  • 2Show learners a printed flyer from a local Accra market (e.g. Makola Market promotional poster) on the projector and ask: What software do you think was used to design this poster?
  • UNDERSTANDING DESKTOP PUBLISHING SOFTWARE AND ITS IMPORTANCE
  • 1Display the definition on projector: Desktop Publishing (DTP) is software that combines text, images, and graphics to create professional-looking documents like posters, brochures, and newsletters — use textbook page to confirm definition
  • 2Ask: Why would a trader like Ama selling fabrics at Kejetia Market need DTP software to make an advertisement? Learners write two reasons in exercise books
  • 3List four DTP packages on board: MS-Publisher, Adobe InDesign, LibreOffice Draw, QuarkXpress — learners copy names and circle the one they recognise from their computers at school
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3Textbook
  • 4Printed market flyer example
  • 1Invite one learner to state one reason why a school would use DTP software to create a report or yearbook
  • 2Learners show thumbs up if they agree DTP is important for professional document design, thumbs down if unsure
Exercise
  • 1Name two reasons why desktop publishing software is important for creating professional documents, and list one DTP software package in their exercise books.

  • 1Recall the steps to open MS-Publisher and identify the difference between a blank publication and a template
  • 2Ask learners: What did we do with MS-Publisher yesterday? Hands up to recall opening the software and exploring the start screen
  • CREATING AND SAVING A DOCUMENT FROM BLANK AND TEMPLATE
  • 1Open MS-Publisher on computer/laptop and display on projector; demonstrate clicking File > New > Blank Publication; create a new document and type learner name (e.g. Ama's Flyer) into the title area; save the file with File > Save As using naming format: YourName_Publication_Date (e.g. Ama_Publication_2026-04-23)
  • 2Repeat demonstration: File > New > Templates; select one pre-designed template (e.g. Business Card template); show how the template auto-populates content boxes; save this second file with File > Save As using format: YourName_Template_2026-04-23
  • 3Learners open their own computers/laptops; follow along step-by-step: create one blank publication, save it with their own name; then create one template-based document, save it — teacher circulates to confirm all 32 learners have both files saved correctly with proper naming
  • 4Slower learners: pair with a faster peer to co-create and observe; fast finishers: explore a second template style and save a third file.
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3MS-Publisher software
  • 4Textbook (reference for template types)
  • 1Ask three volunteers to show their two saved files on screen via projector and state aloud the file names they used
  • 2Learners thumbs-up/thumbs-down to confirm: A blank publication has no pre-set design, a template has ready-made layouts — do you agree?
Exercise
  • 1Create a blank MS-Publisher document, type your full name as the title, and save it with the file name YourName_Blank_Publication; then create one document from a template and save it with the file name YourName_Template_Publication — show both saved files to the teacher in their exercise books.
