- 1Learners will identify consonant sounds that appear together at the start of familiar Akan words
- 2Show learners three word cards with words: kraman, gye, dɔm. Ask: Dwom bɛn na ete hɔ? (Which sounds do you hear at the start?) Learners repeat the first sound of each word together
|
- UNDERSTANDING CONSONANT CLUSTERS IN AKAN WORDS
- 1Display word cards showing: kraman (animal), grataa (book), bra (come), dɔm (crowd). Point to kraman and say: Kl ne kasa abɔ a wɔka kɔkɔ (K and r are consonants that go together). Learners repeat the word kraman five times, listening to the kl sound at the start
- 2Give each learner a word card from the pile. Call out: Hena na ɔwɔ kasa abɔ (Who has consonant clusters)? Learners stand and say their word aloud if it has two consonants together at the start. Guide learners to repeat: kl, gr, br, dr sounds from the word cards
- 3Struggling learners: work with word cards showing only kr- and br- clusters; use physical clapping to mark the cluster sound.
|
- 1Word cards (kraman, grataa, bra, dɔm, gradeɛ, brantaa)
- 2Learners Resource Pack
|
- 1Learners sit in pairs. Say three words aloud: kraman, dɔm, grataa. Pairs point to the word card that has a consonant cluster and whisper the two sounds together
- 2Ask: Ɛnam din bɛn so na wo akita kasa abɔ? (In which animal name did you hear consonants together?) Volunteers stand and say one word with a consonant cluster from today's lesson
Exercise
- 1Show the word card grataa. Ask learners: Kasa abɔ bɛn na eto hɔ? Write or say the two consonant sounds you hear at the start of this word in their exercise books.

|
- 1Identify consonant clusters in familiar Akan words by listening and repeating
- 2Say these words aloud: 'Nkruma, Sram, Dwan'. Ask learners to listen and clap twice when they hear two consonant sounds together at the start. Repeat each word once more and confirm the clusters: nk-, sr-, dw-
|
- RECOGNISING CONSONANT CLUSTERS IN AKAN WORDS
- 1Distribute word cards showing words with consonant clusters: 'bra' (come), 'kwa' (go), 'sra' (arrange), 'dwene' (think), 'pram' (carry). Ask learners to look at each card, underline the two consonants at the start with their finger, and say the whole word aloud three times. Move through cards one by one, asking different learners to read each word
- 2Write on the board: 'Nkruma pɔɔ sram no.' (Nkruma likes arranging.) Point to the word 'pɔɔ' and ask: 'Where is the suapɔ so (cluster)?' Guide learners to see that not every word has a cluster. Then point to 'sram' and ask learners to identify and circle the cluster 'sr-'. Repeat with two more short sentences, each containing one word with a clear cluster
- 3Struggling learners: work with only 3 word cards and repeat each cluster 5 times before saying the full word.
|
- 1Word cards (with consonant clusters: bra, kwa, sra, dwene, pram, krɔn, kwan)
- 2Chalkboard or whiteboard
- 3Exercise books and pencils
|
- 1Call out five words (one at a time): 'krɔn, dwene, bra, kwan, sra'. Learners stand up if the word starts with a consonant cluster, sit down if it does not. Repeat the process and ask: 'Which clusters did you hear today?'
- 2Learners whisper their favourite consonant cluster sound from today's lesson to their partner, then clap the number of times equal to how many sounds they hear in that cluster (two claps each time)
Exercise
- 1Say these three words aloud: 'pram', 'den', 'sram'. Ask learners to write down (or draw and label) which two words start with a consonant cluster, and circle the cluster in each one in their exercise books.
|
|
|
- 1Identify consonant clusters and digraphs in familiar Akan words from prior lessons
- 2Display three Akan words on the board: 'dwɔ' (sleep), 'ɔkra' (soul), 'skra' (skeleton). Ask learners to clap once when they hear a sound at the start of each word that has TWO consonants together. Repeat each word clearly three times
|
- RECOGNISING CONSONANT CLUSTERS IN PARAGRAPHS
- 1Read aloud a short paragraph (3–4 sentences) about Ama's morning at Makola Market: 'Ama nɔ Akosua kɔ Makola. Wɔ kyɛ skɛm na wɔ tɔ dwɔ. Wɔ faa nka na wɔ kɔɔ adwuma.' Write the paragraph on the board. Using word cards, display each word separately: 'skɛm', 'dwɔ', 'kyɛ'. Point to 'skɛm' and say: 'This word begins with 's' and 'k' together — that is a consonant cluster.' Learners repeat the word chorally three times
- 2Distribute one set of word cards to each pair. Pairs scan the paragraph and identify all words with consonant clusters at the start (skɛm, dwɔ). Pairs write these words in their exercise books and circle the two consonants together. Ask one representative from each pair to write their answer on the board and say the cluster sound aloud
- 3Struggling learners: work with just two word cards (skɛm, dwɔ) and highlight the consonant cluster with a coloured pen. Fast finishers: find a consonant cluster in the middle or end of a word.
|
- 1Word cards (skɛm, dwɔ, kyɛ, kasa, ɔkra, Kwame, dwɔ, wɔ, ɔpɛ)
- 2Paragraph text (market scenario)
- 3Exercise books
- 4Coloured pens (for differentiation)
|
- 1Display five Akan words: 'dwɔ', 'kyɛ', 'skɛm', 'kasa', 'ɔkra'. Learners hold up fingers 1–5 to show which word begins with a consonant cluster. Confirm answers: words 1, 2, and 3 start with clusters
- 2Pairs create one sentence using a word with a consonant cluster from today's paragraph. One learner from three pairs reads their sentence to the class; classmates identify and clap the cluster sound
Exercise
- 1Listen as I read this Akan sentence: 'Kwame dwɔ wɔ ɔpɛ mu kosi awia.' Write down or circle the two words that start with a consonant cluster. Say each word aloud and explain the cluster sound you hear in their exercise books.
