Demonstrate knowledge of common deficiency diseases of humans, their causes, symptoms, effects and prevention
Explain the relationship between food nutrients and common deficiency diseases and how they affect humans.
Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of selected viral, diseases of humans, their causes, symptoms, effects and management
Explain the nature of viral diseases with special emphasis on corona virus (COVID-19) /Ebola/H1N1 disease its causes, symptoms, effects on humans and its prevention
Learners will explain the relationship between specific food nutrients and at least three common deficiency diseases, naming causes and effects on the human body.

  • 1Identify common foods eaten in Ghana and name the main nutrients they contain
  • 2Ask learners to name five common Ghanaian foods they ate yesterday (jollof rice, waakye, groundnut soup, banku, fried yam) and write them on the board
  • FOOD NUTRIENTS AND BODY FUNCTIONS
  • 1Display the Science kit chart showing carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins; read aloud that carbohydrates give energy, proteins build muscles and tissues, vitamins keep bones and eyes healthy
  • 2Ask learners to match five foods from the textbook (rice, beans, oranges, eggs, palm oil) to their main nutrient using the exercise book
  • 3Learners sketch one food and label its main nutrient on the chart provided
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/chart showing nutrients
  • 3Chart/diagram of food groups
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Invite a learner to name one nutrient and one food that contains it; repeat for three learners
  • 2Learners hold up their exercise books to show their food-nutrient match
Exercise
  • 1Name one Ghanaian food and explain which nutrient it provides to the body in their exercise books.

  • 1Identify the key characteristics of three viral diseases (COVID-19, Ebola, H1N1) by recalling their causes and transmission routes
  • 2Ask learners: Which viral diseases have you heard about in Ghana in the last 5 years? Learners shout out names; write them on the board and circle COVID-19, Ebola, and H1N1
  • NATURE AND CAUSES OF COVID-19, EBOLA, AND H1N1
  • 1Using the Textbook, read aloud the definition of each viral disease and write on the board: COVID-19 (coronavirus, respiratory), Ebola (filovirus, blood contact), H1N1 (influenza virus, respiratory droplets). Learners copy into exercise books
  • 2Display the Science kit/specimens showing virus particle models or the Chart/diagram showing transmission routes. Point to each route (respiratory droplets, blood contact, person-to-person) and have learners repeat chorally
  • 3Ask learners to match each disease name to its transmission mode using the chart: COVID-19 → cough/sneeze, Ebola → blood/body fluids, H1N1 → airborne droplets. Pairs check their work
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/specimens (virus models)
  • 3Chart/diagram (showing transmission routes)
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1A volunteer comes to the board and writes one symptom each for COVID-19 (fever, cough), Ebola (bleeding, organ failure), and H1N1 (sore throat, weakness) while the class confirms
  • 2Learners whisper to their partner three prevention methods (handwashing, mask, vaccination, isolation) and rate their confidence with fingers 1–5
Exercise
  • 1Write one sentence explaining how COVID-19 is different from Ebola in terms of how it spreads from person to person in their exercise books.
