  • 1Recall prior knowledge about magnets and magnetic objects from everyday life
  • 2Show learners an iron nail and a plastic pen; ask which one sticks to a magnet brought from home and why
  • WHAT MAGNETS ARE AND THEIR TYPES
  • 1Display the Science kit/specimens containing a bar magnet, horseshoe magnet, and electromagnet on the chart/diagram; explain that magnets are materials that attract iron and steel
  • 2Learners observe and sketch the three types of magnets in their exercise books, labelling the poles (North and South) using the chart as reference
  • 3Ask: Which magnet type do you think is strongest? Learners predict, then test with iron filings to confirm
  • 1Science kit/specimens (bar magnet, horseshoe magnet, electromagnet, iron filings)
  • 2Chart/diagram showing magnet poles and types
  • 3Textbook (Force and Motion chapter)
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Learners work in pairs using the textbook to list two uses of magnets in Ghanaian markets (e.g., securing money boxes, sorting metal coins)
  • 2A representative from three pairs shares their use aloud; class repeats each use chorally
Exercise
  • 1Name two types of magnets from the Science kit and describe one characteristic (attraction, repulsion, or pole direction) you observed in their exercise books.

May 2026
  • 1Recall examples of simple machines found in local Ghanaian homes and farms
  • 2Show learners a chart/diagram with 5 pictures: a crowbar, a bucket pulley at a well, a ramp for loading goods onto a trotro, a grinding stone wheel, and a scissors. Ask: Which of these tools do you see at home or in the market?
  • IDENTIFYING SIMPLE MACHINES IN EVERYDAY WORK
  • 1Using the textbook and science kit/specimens, display 6 simple machines: lever (crowbar used by Kwame at the market), pulley (bucket at well), inclined plane (ramp), wheel and axle (grinding mill), wedge (cutlass), and screw (bottle opener). Ask learners to name each one and write the name in their exercise book
  • 2Show a short scenario: Ama needs to lift a heavy bag of cassava onto a cart. Which simple machine helps her — a lever or a wheel? Learners discuss in pairs and one group representative explains why the lever helps her lift more easily
  • 3Learners draw or label ONE simple machine from their home or market (e.g. mortar and pestle as a lever, or a pulley from a well) in their exercise book with the machine's name written below
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/specimens
  • 3Chart/diagram showing 6 simple machines
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Ask: Show fingers 1–5 to rate how confident you are at naming 3 simple machines — 5 is very confident, 1 is not sure
  • 2Invite a learner who is confident to stand and name two simple machines they use at home; ask a learner who showed lower confidence to name one they recognise from the chart
Exercise
  • 1Name three simple machines and give one example of how each is used by a person in your village or town (e.g. lever — Kofi uses a crowbar to dig soil; pulley — bucket at well; wheel — grinding mill for grain) in their exercise books.
