  • 1Recall what learners already know about using the internet and computers for learning activities
  • 2Ask learners: Show hands — who has used a computer or phone to watch a learning video or find information for homework? Invite a volunteer to name one thing they learned online and describe where they were when they learned it
  • WHAT IS A VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?
  • 1Open a web browser on the laptop and project it on the projector. Navigate to an example VLE platform (such as a school website with online resources, or Google Classroom interface). Point to key features: video lessons, assignment uploads, discussion forums. Ask: What tools do you see that help people learn? Learners list three features they observe in their exercise books
  • 2Explain in simple terms: A Virtual Learning Environment is a website or app where teachers and learners meet online to share lessons, videos, and activities without being in the same classroom. Ask learners to whisper to their partner: Why might a farmer like Yakubu want to learn about new planting methods online instead of waiting for a workshop in town? Take two responses and write them on the board. Use Computer/Laptop during the task
  • 3Struggling learners: pair them with a stronger peer to identify just one feature on the screen. Fast finishers: write down the web address (URL) shown in the browser and explain what each part means.
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3Internet connection
  • 4Web browser
  • 1Learners stand if they agree with this statement: 'VLEs help people learn even when schools are closed or they live far from a town.' Ask a learner who stood to explain one reason in one sentence
  • 2Show three scenario cards on the projector: (1) Ama is a seamstress in a village with no sewing school nearby. (2) Kofi wants to learn coding but has no computer club at his school. (3) Abena is sick at home but wants to keep up with her class. Learners point to one scenario where a VLE would help most and discuss with a partner why
Exercise
  • 1Write in your exercise book: Name one reason why Virtual Learning Environments are important for learning in Ghana. Give one example of something you could learn on a VLE

  • 1Learners will recall the names and purposes of at least two open learning websites introduced in previous lessons
  • 2Display the names Khan Academy, Coursera, and Edx on the projector. Ask learners to whisper to their partner which website they have heard of and what subject it teaches
  • NAVIGATING AND EXPLORING KHAN ACADEMY USING A WEB BROWSER
  • 1Open a web browser on the Computer/Laptop and navigate to Khan Academy's homepage displayed on the Projector. Ask learners to identify three features visible on the page: (1) the search bar, (2) course categories, and (3) free learning symbol. Invite one learner from the group that finishes first to point to each feature on the screen
  • 2Demonstrate searching for 'Mathematics Grade 7' in the Khan Academy search bar using the Projector. Show how the browser displays search results with lesson titles and video icons. Learners note down in their exercise books the first three lesson titles that appear and write one sentence explaining how a browser helps find learning content on this website
  • 3Struggling learners: work with a partner and copy down only the first lesson title shown; fast finishers: search for a second subject topic independently.
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3Internet connection
  • 4Exercise books
  • 5Pens
  • 1Ask learners to compare Khan Academy with Coursera by standing if they prefer video lessons and sitting if they prefer course certificates. A representative from each group explains their choice in one sentence
  • 2Learners whisper to their partner one way they could use an open learning website to help them study English or Science outside school time. Select two pairs to share their answers with the class
Exercise
  • 1Open a web browser on the Computer and navigate to one open learning website. Search for a lesson on a subject of your choice and write down: (1) the website name, (2) the lesson title you found, and (3) one subject area offered on that website in their exercise books.
