  • 1Identify basic agricultural tools that are used by farmers in Ghana
  • 2Show learners a picture or actual image of a hoe and ask: What tool is this and where have you seen it used? Learners discuss with a partner and share one answer per pair
  • NAMING AND SORTING COMMON AGRICULTURAL TOOLS
  • 1Display the Chart/diagram showing six agricultural tools (hoe, cutlass, rake, shovel, fork, spade) used in Ghanaian farms. Point to each tool and say its name aloud; learners repeat chorally three times. Use the Science kit/specimens if available to show actual tools or models
  • 2Give each pair of learners a copy of the Chart/diagram and a list of six on-farm activities (clearing land, planting, weeding, harvesting, digging, raking). Learners draw lines to match each tool to one activity and write their matches in their Exercise book. Invite one representative from each pair to share one match with the class
  • 3Struggling learners: provide only three tools and three activities to match. Fast finishers: add a fourth column to describe how each tool is held or used.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/specimens (actual tools or models if available)
  • 3Chart/diagram showing six agricultural tools
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Show a hoe and ask learners to stand up if they can name it, sit if they cannot. Ask those standing to whisper the name to a partner who sat down
  • 2Learners hold up their Exercise books to show one tool-activity match they wrote. Ask a volunteer to name the tool and activity aloud while others give a thumbs up if they agree
Exercise
  • 1Write the names of three agricultural tools you know and one activity each tool is used for. Example: Hoe — weeding. (Assessed against ability to identify tools and describe use.) in their exercise books.

  • 1Identify the correct agricultural tool for a given farm task based on prior lesson knowledge
  • 2Display three tools (hoe, cutlass, spade) on the bench. Ask learners: Which tool would Kwame use to dig holes for planting yam seedlings? Allow responses through hand-raising
  • MATCHING TOOLS TO SPECIFIC FARM ACTIVITIES
  • 1Using the Science kit specimens and textbook diagrams, demonstrate each of the four main tools (hoe, spade, cutlass, rake) one by one. Explain aloud: A hoe is used for weeding because the blade cuts soil sideways; a spade digs deep; a cutlass cuts tough plants. Learners copy the tool name and one use into their exercise books
  • 2Divide the class into four groups of 5–6 learners. Give each group one farm activity card: Group 1 gets weeding, Group 2 gets digging, Group 3 gets grass cutting, Group 4 gets harvesting. Each group selects the correct tool from the Science kit and explains to the class in one sentence why that tool works best
  • 3Struggling learners: work with the textbook image and name the tool aloud with teacher support before writing. Fast finishers: match tools to additional tasks not on the original cards.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/specimens (hoe, spade, cutlass, rake models or real tools)
  • 3Chart/diagram showing agricultural tools and their uses
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Ask the class: If you were helping at your family farm and needed to prepare soil for planting cassava, which tool would you pick? Learners show their answer using a number (1=hoe, 2=spade, 3=cutlass, 4=rake) on their fingers
  • 2A volunteer comes to the front and mimes using one tool while the class guesses which tool and which farm task is being shown
Exercise
  • 1Abena is preparing her school garden. She needs to weed between the rows and dig holes for new seedlings. Name the two tools she should use and explain what each one does in one sentence per tool in their exercise books.
