  • 1Identify compliant and resistant materials used in making simple structures
  • 2Show learners a cardboard box and a metal frame side by side. Ask: Which one bends easily? Which one is stiff? Learners point and whisper answers to their partner
  • UNDERSTANDING MATERIAL PROPERTIES FOR STRUCTURES
  • 1Using the textbook, explain the difference between compliant materials (paper, cardboard, plastic—bend and flex) and resistant materials (wood, metal—stay stiff and strong). Provide three Ghanaian examples: Ama's mother uses cardboard boxes from Makola Market (compliant) to store cloth, but carpenters use wood (resistant) to build furniture. Ask learners to classify five materials you name aloud into compliant or resistant in their exercise books
  • 2Distribute tools and materials (scissors, paper, cardboard, metal strips, wood offcuts) for learners to handle briefly. Learners bend and test each material gently, then record in their exercise books which materials bend easily and which do not. Call on one representative from each group to share one observation with the class
  • 3Struggling learners: focus on two materials only (paper and wood) and sort them into two piles with peer support.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Tools and materials for practical (scissors, paper, cardboard, metal strips, wood offcuts)
  • 3Exercise book
  • 4Pictures of structures (wooden chair, plastic bucket, metal gate)
  • 5Cardboard box and metal frame
  • 1Ask learners to stand if they think paper is compliant and sit if they think it is resistant. Affirm correct responses and clarify any misconceptions using the textbook example
  • 2Pair learners and ask them to whisper one material (compliant or resistant) to their partner, who must say aloud whether it bends or stays stiff. Reverse roles for three rounds
Exercise
  • 1Kwame is designing a simple roof structure. Should he use plastic sheets (compliant) or metal rods (resistant) for the strong frame? Write your choice and one reason why in your exercise book
