  • 1Recall the names of common skin diseases that affect people in Ghanaian communities
  • 2Ask learners to whisper to their partner any skin disease they have heard of or seen in their neighbourhood. Collect 3–4 answers aloud from volunteers and write them on the chalkboard
  • IDENTIFYING COMMON SKIN DISEASES IN GHANA
  • 1Divide the class into 4 groups. Give each group a name of a common skin disease written on paper: measles, ringworm, heat rash, or chicken pox. Using the textbook and exercise books, each group lists the name of the disease, what it looks like, and who it usually affects. A representative from each group reads their disease name and one key fact aloud
  • 2Write all four disease names on the chalkboard. Point to each name and ask learners to repeat it chorally three times. Then ask: Which of these diseases have you or someone in your family had? Learners show hands or whisper their answer to a partner. Confirm that these are common in Ghana, especially during hot seasons or in crowded areas
  • 3Struggling learners: work with only two disease names (measles and ringworm) with a teacher or peer helper who reads the textbook sections aloud.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 4Picture cards or scenario cards (measles, ringworm, heat rash, chicken pox)
  • 1Ask learners to stand if they can name one cause of a skin disease. Call on one boy and one girl to each name a different cause (e.g. poor hygiene, heat, contact with infected person, dirty objects). Write these causes on the chalkboard
  • 2Learners work in pairs to discuss one way they can keep their skin healthy at home (e.g. bathing daily, wearing clean clothes, washing hands). One pair volunteers to share their idea with the class
Exercise
  • 1Ask learners to write or draw in their exercise books: the name of one common skin disease found in Ghana, one cause of that disease, and one way to prevent it. Collect books to assess whether each learner can identify at least one disease and link it to a cause or prevention method
