  • 1Learners will recall prior knowledge about exploration and trade to activate understanding of European arrival in Ghana
  • 2Ask learners: What do you know about ships and traders visiting Ghana in the past? Learners share ideas aloud while you write key words (ships, gold, trade) on the chalkboard
  • IDENTIFYING THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES THAT CAME TO GHANA
  • 1Write on the chalkboard the names of eight European countries: Portugal, Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Norway. Read each name aloud and ask learners to repeat chorally. Explain that traders and explorers from these countries sailed to Ghana to buy gold and other goods, starting from the 1400s
  • 2Distribute the textbook to each learner or pair. Direct them to the section on European arrival in Ghana. Ask learners to find and list in their exercise books the names of the countries mentioned in the textbook. Invite one representative from each pair to read their list aloud while you check against the chalkboard list
  • 3Struggling learners: provide a simplified list with only four countries (Portugal, Britain, France, Netherlands) to identify from the textbook.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Ask learners to stand and call out one European country from the lesson. They sit only after their country has been called. Repeat until all eight countries have been named at least once
  • 2Learners whisper to their neighbour: Which European country do you think came to Ghana first? After 30 seconds, ask two volunteers to share their guess with the class
Exercise
  • 1In your exercise book, write down four European countries that came to Ghana. Can you arrange them in any order you think they arrived? Write 1–4 next to each country
