  • 1Identify current energy use habits in homes and recall everyday situations where electricity is consumed
  • 2Ask learners: What happens when you switch on a light bulb at home? Learners whisper their answers to a partner, then one representative from each group shares one answer aloud
  • UNDERSTANDING ENERGY CONSERVATION AT HOME
  • 1Open the textbook to the section on energy conservation and read aloud: Ama's family leaves lights on all day, but Kwame's family switches them off when leaving a room. Write on the chalkboard: 'Switching off lights when not in use saves electricity.' Ask learners to copy this sentence into their exercise books and underline the action (switching off)
  • 2Display three energy-saving actions on the chalkboard: (1) Use energy-saving bulbs instead of old bulbs, (2) Unplug gadgets when they are not being used, (3) Close the refrigerator door quickly. Learners stand up and clap once for each action they recognize as something their family does at home
  • 3Struggling learners: work with the teacher to identify just one action their family already does; fast finishers can think of one additional action they have seen at home.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Ask three volunteers to each mime one energy-saving action (switching off a light, unplugging a phone charger, using a light bulb). The class chorally names each action after watching
  • 2Learners turn to the person next to them and share one way they will conserve energy at home this week. Select three pairs to report back to the class
Exercise
  • 1Write in your exercise book: Name two ways your family can save electricity at home and explain why each one is important. Learners must write a complete sentence for each way
