  • 1Recall examples of how energy is wasted and used in their own homes
  • 2Ask learners: What appliances do you use at home that need electricity? (e.g. light bulb, radio, refrigerator). Learners whisper their answer to their partner, then one representative from each row shares aloud
  • UNDERSTANDING ENERGY CONSERVATION AT HOME
  • 1Open the textbook to the section on responsible use of resources. Read aloud: 'Ama switches off the light when she leaves her bedroom. Kwame uses an energy-saving bulb in his room. Their parents put off the TV when no one is watching.' Write these three actions on the chalkboard as you read. Ask learners to repeat each action chorally twice. Then ask: Which of these actions does your family do at home? Learners write one action they recognise in their exercise books
  • 2Display the three actions on the chalkboard: (1) Switch off lights when not in use, (2) Use energy-saving bulbs, (3) Turn off gadgets (TV, radio) when leaving home. Point to each one. Ask learners in pairs to discuss: Which action is easiest to do? Which one saves the most electricity? One pair from the back shares their answer with the class
  • 3Struggling learners: work with the teacher to identify one action they currently do at home and draw a picture of it in their exercise book.
  • 1Textbook (Our World and Our People)
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Ask learners to stand. Call out each energy conservation action from the chalkboard. Learners clap once if they do that action at home, twice if they do not. This reinforces the three main ways and shows class participation
  • 2Ask: If everyone in your home switched off lights when leaving a room, what would happen? Learners turn to their partner and whisper their answer. Call on a volunteer to say their answer aloud
Exercise
  • 1Write in your exercise book: List two ways you can conserve energy in your home and explain why each one is important

May 2026
  • 1Identify common energy-wasting habits in Ghanaian homes and recall ways to conserve energy
  • 2Display three pictures on the chalkboard: a room with all lights on during daytime, a fridge left open, and a fan running in an empty room. Ask learners: Which of these wastes energy and why? Learners call out answers
  • IDENTIFYING ENERGY-SAVING PRACTICES IN THE HOME
  • 1Write these three practices on the chalkboard: (1) Switch off lights when leaving a room, (2) Use energy-saving bulbs instead of old bulbs, (3) Unplug chargers and gadgets when not in use. Read aloud as learners follow in their exercise books. Ask: Which one do you already do at home? Learners raise hands and a volunteer explains their answer
  • 2Divide the class into three groups. Give Group 1 the task: How does switching off lights save energy? Give Group 2: How do energy-saving bulbs help? Give Group 3: Why should we unplug chargers? Each group discusses, then one representative from each group shares their answer. Write key points on the chalkboard as they speak
  • 3Struggling learners: pair with stronger peers and focus on one practice only.
  • 1Chalkboard
  • 2Exercise books
  • 3Textbook (Our World and Our People)
  • 1Display the three chalkboard points again. Ask the class to chant together three times: Switch off lights! Use saving bulbs! Unplug chargers! Learners repeat chorally to cement the three main practices
  • 2Ask: Which energy-saving practice will you do first in your home this weekend? Learners write or draw their choice in exercise books, then show a partner. Two volunteers share their choices with the class
Exercise
  • 1Name two ways you can save energy in your home and explain why each one is important. Learners write their answer in exercise books in 2–3 sentences
