  • 1Recall what energy is used for in the home and identify household items that use electricity
  • 2Ask learners: What electrical items do you use at home every day? Learners call out answers (lights, radio, fan, TV, phone charger). Write five items on the chalkboard as they respond
  • IDENTIFYING WAYS TO CONSERVE ENERGY AT HOME
  • 1Open the textbook to the section on energy conservation. Read aloud three key methods: (1) switch off lights when leaving a room, (2) use energy-saving bulbs instead of old bulbs, (3) turn off all gadgets when leaving home. Ask learners to repeat each method chorally three times to help them remember
  • 2Distribute exercise books to each learner. Call on one representative from each group of four to come to the chalkboard and write one energy conservation method in their own words while their group watches. Confirm each answer before the next group writes theirs
  • 3Struggling learners: pair them with a stronger peer to help them identify one method from the textbook. Fast finishers: ask them to think of a fourth way to save energy at home and write it in their exercise book.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Ask learners to stand if they promise to switch off one light at home today. Celebrate their commitment with a round of applause. Repeat for turning off gadgets and using energy-saving bulbs
  • 2Learners whisper to their partner one thing they learned today about saving energy. Invite three volunteers to share their partner's answer with the whole class
Exercise
  • 1Write in your exercise book: Name two ways you can save electricity in your home. Use a complete sentence for each one

  • 1Learners will identify common energy-wasting habits in Ghanaian homes and recall at least two energy conservation methods from yesterday's lesson
  • 2Display three pictures on the chalkboard: a room with lights on during daylight, a fan running with nobody in the room, and a phone charger plugged in all day. Ask learners: Which of these wastes energy and why? Learners whisper their answers to their partner
  • EXPLAINING ENERGY CONSERVATION METHODS IN THE HOME
  • 1Write on the chalkboard three conservation methods: (1) Switch off lights when leaving a room, (2) Use energy-saving bulbs instead of old bulbs, (3) Unplug gadgets when not in use. Read each method aloud using the textbook as reference. Ask learners to write all three methods in their exercise books and draw one small picture next to each method showing the action
  • 2Ask three learners—one from each ability group—to come to the chalkboard and write one reason why each method saves energy (e.g. 'Switching off lights stops electricity flowing when not needed'). Learners copy the reasons into their exercise books. Guide struggling learners by providing sentence starters: 'This saves energy because.'
  • 3Struggling learners: copy only two methods and one reason each. Fast finishers: add a fourth method from their own observation at home.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Ask learners to turn to a partner and take turns explaining one energy conservation method in their own words without looking at their exercise books. Listen to three pairs and correct any misunderstandings
  • 2Learners stand and do a silent mime of switching off a light, using an energy-saving bulb, and unplugging a charger in sequence. Ask: Show thumbs up if you understand all three ways to save energy at home
Exercise
  • 1Learners write or draw three ways to conserve energy in the home and write one sentence explaining why each method is important. Assessment criteria: all three methods identified, each with a reason linked to saving electricity or money in their exercise books.
