  • 1Identify positive and negative numbers by recalling their positions on a number line
  • 2Show learners a ruler marked with numbers 0 to 10. Ask: Where is zero on this ruler? What numbers are to the right of zero? Learners point and name the numbers aloud
  • BUILDING A NUMBER LINE WITH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE VALUES
  • 1Explain that a number line can show numbers both above and below zero. Draw a horizontal number line on the board with 0 in the centre, positive numbers (+1, +2, +3, +4, +5) to the right, and negative numbers (-1, -2, -3, -4, -5) to the left. Label the positive side red and negative side blue so learners visualise the difference
  • 2Give each pair of learners a ruler and graph board to draw their own number line. Ask them to mark 0 in the middle, then count and write +1 to +5 on the right and -1 to -5 on the left. Circulate to check that negative signs are written correctly before the numbers
  • 3Struggling learners: provide a pre-drawn number line template with 0 marked; they only add the positive and negative labels with your support.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Ruler
  • 4Graph board
  • 5Marker or pencil
  • 1Ask learners: Show me with your fingers how many steps from 0 to +3 on your number line. Now show me how many steps from 0 to -3. Learners hold up fingers to show the distance is the same
  • 2Pairs swap their number lines and check each other's work using the textbook example as a reference. Ask a representative from one pair to name one positive and one negative number they marked
Exercise
  • 1On your number line, mark the number that is 4 steps to the right of 0 and the number that is 4 steps to the left of 0. Write both numbers in your exercise book. Which is positive and which is negative?
