  • 1Learners will recall which European countries came to Ghana
  • 2Ask learners: Has anyone seen pictures of old forts or castles in Ghana? Allow three learners to share what they know about who built these structures. Listen for any mention of European names or countries
  • IDENTIFYING THE EUROPEAN NATIONS
  • 1Display the chart showing the eight European countries: Portugal, Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Netherlands. Read each country name aloud; learners repeat chorally twice. Ask: Which of these countries do you know? Invite a volunteer to point to one country on the chart and name it. Write the country name on the board to build a reference list for the class
  • 2Distribute pictures of old European forts and settlements in Ghana (Cape Coast Castle, Fort St. Jago, Fort Amsterdam, Osu Castle). Pair learners and assign each pair one picture. Learners examine their picture and match it to one of the eight European countries using the chart as a guide. Ask pairs to hold up their picture and state which country they think built it. Provide brief confirmation: 'Yes, this fort was built by the British at Cape Coast' or similar
  • 3Weaker learners work with the chart and only match three of the most well-known forts (British, Dutch, Portuguese). Fast finishers name both the country and the year the fort was built if provided on the chart.
  • 1Chart showing eight European countries (Portugal, Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands)
  • 2Pictures of European forts and settlements in Ghana (Cape Coast Castle, Fort St. Jago, Fort Amsterdam, Osu Castle)
  • 3Globe or world map
  • 4Exercise books and pencils
  • 1Ask learners to stand and arrange themselves in a line by the order they think the Europeans came to Ghana, starting with Portugal (who came first). Learners compare their positions with a partner and adjust if needed. Call on a learner to state the correct order: Portugal, then the Netherlands, then Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway
  • 2Learners sit and draw or write in their exercise books the names of two European countries they learned today and one thing they remember about them. A volunteer reads their answer aloud to the class
Exercise
  • 1Name three European countries that came to Ghana. Write them in the order you think they arrived, with the first country at the top. Check your answer against the chart provided in their exercise books.
