  • 1Identify the position of objects in the classroom using directional words
  • 2Point to the chalkboard and ask learners to name what they see. Ask: Where is the chalkboard? Is it in front of us or behind us? Learners raise their hands to answer chorally
  • DESCRIBING POSITIONS USING WORDS
  • 1Write four words on the chalkboard: above, below, behind, in front of. Point to each word and say it aloud three times; learners repeat chorally. Show the textbook and hold it above your head, then below your waist, asking learners to say which position each time using the words on the board
  • 2Place Kofi's exercise book in front of Ama's exercise book. Ask: Where is Kofi's book? (In front of Ama's.) Then move Kofi's book behind Ama's book and ask the question again. Learners point and say the new position aloud together
  • 3Struggling learners: use only two position words (above and below) and practise with one pair of objects at a time. Fast finishers: describe multiple objects in the classroom using all four position words.
  • 1Chalkboard
  • 2Textbook
  • 3Exercise book
  • 1Ask learners to stand up and move to different positions in the classroom (behind a chair, in front of a desk, above a mat). Call on different learners to describe where they are using the position words from the textbook
  • 2Play a quick game: say a position word (e.g. behind), and learners run to hide behind something in the classroom, then describe their hiding spot to the class
Exercise
  • 1Point to a learner sitting between two others and ask the class: Where is Nene sitting? Is Nene in front of Yaw or behind Yaw? Learners write or draw the answer in their exercise book
