Content Standard & Indicator

K2.6.7.1.6
Demonstrate understanding of types of soil we find around us and which one helps plant to grow well.
Prepare beds outside for Gardening by measuring the length and breadth of the land.
Learners will measure the length and breadth of a garden plot using non-standardized measurement tools and record their findings.

  • 1Recall what length and breadth mean by identifying the long and short sides of familiar classroom objects
  • 2Show learners a rectangular exercise book. Ask: Which side is long? Which side is short? Learners point to each side as you name it aloud three times together
  • MEASURING GARDEN PLOT LENGTH AND BREADTH WITH A STICK
  • 1Divide the class into 4 groups. Take all learners outside to the garden area. Using the chalkboard, draw a rectangle on the ground with chalk to show the garden plot boundary. Place a stick at one end. Demonstrate slowly: place stick end-to-end along the long side, counting aloud as you move: one stick, two sticks, three sticks. Write the number 3 on a small paper held up for all groups to see. Repeat with the short side and count: one stick, two sticks. Write 2 on paper
  • 2Assign each group a marked garden plot area with a rope boundary. Give Group 1 a stick and direct them to count as they place the stick end-to-end along the length (long side) of their plot. They count aloud together and one learner holds up fingers to show the total number. Repeat with breadth (short side). Groups 2, 3, and 4 take turns using the same stick to measure their own plots. Each group records their length and breadth numbers on their exercise book by writing or drawing circles to represent stick counts. Teacher circulates and guides each group to say their measurements aloud: Ama's group: our length is 5 sticks, our breadth is 3 sticks
  • 3Struggling learners: pair with a stronger peer to count together. Fast finishers: help the teacher count and record measurements for another group.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 4Stick (non-standardized measurement tool)
  • 5Rope (for plot boundary)
  • 6Small papers for recording numbers
  • 1Call on one representative from each group to come forward and say their garden plot measurements aloud to the class: Our garden has length of ___ sticks and breadth of ___ sticks. The class repeats each measurement together
  • 2Ask learners to show thumbs up if they found the long side first, thumbs down if they found the short side first. Reinforce: length is always the long side, breadth is always the short side
Exercise
  • 1Give each learner a drawing of a rectangle on the textbook or exercise book. Learners draw a long line along the length and a short line along the breadth, or write the words length and breadth in the correct places. Teacher checks to confirm learners can identify and label each dimension correctly
