  • 1Identify and name domestic and wild animals through a song
  • 2Play the sound of common Ghanaian animals (cow, goat, dog, lion, elephant) on a speaker or chalkboard demonstration. Ask learners: Which animals do we see on Ama's farm? Which animals live in the bush? Learners shout out names chorally
  • CLAPPING SYLLABLES IN ANIMAL NAMES
  • 1Write the word COW on the chalkboard and say it aloud slowly. Clap once and say: COW has 1 syllable. Then write HEN on the chalkboard, clap twice (HEN-hen) and count together: 1, 2. Learners repeat the clapping and counting using the textbook page showing animal pictures. Do the same for GOAT (1 clap), CHICKEN (2 claps), ELEPHANT (3 claps)
  • 2Learners stand in a circle. Call out an animal name (Kofi says cow, Abena says goat, Kwame says elephant). Each learner who hears their animal must clap the syllables while the rest of the class counts aloud using fingers. Repeat with 5 different animals, using the exercise book to write down the number of claps for each animal
  • 3Struggling learners: start with 1-syllable animals only (cow, dog, goat) and clap with teacher support.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Chalkboard
  • 1Sing the first line of Old MacDonald Has a Farm together (using the textbook as reference if available). Learners clap the syllables of the line: Old Mac-Don-ald has a farm (5 claps). Count chorally: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • 2Learners pair up and take turns naming an animal while their partner claps the syllables. Partners count together and hold up fingers to show the number of syllables
Exercise
  • 1Teacher says the name of one animal (e.g. LEOPARD). Learners clap the syllables and write or draw the number of claps in their exercise book. Repeat with three animals: cow, elephant, and snake. Check responses by counting claps together
