  • 1Recall characteristics of farming systems commonly practised in Ghanaian communities
  • 2Show learners three pictures: a cassava field, a field with yam and maize together, and a field with different crops in rotation—ask: What do you see happening in each field?
  • 3Learners whisper to their partner one farming practice their family uses at home; invite 3 volunteers to share with the class
  • IDENTIFYING AND DESCRIBING FARMING SYSTEMS
  • 1Display the Chart/diagram showing five farming systems (Land Rotation, Crop Rotation, Mixed Cropping, Mixed Farming, Organic Farming); read each definition aloud and ask learners to repeat the name chorally twice
  • 2Using the Textbook, learners read one paragraph about a farming system; pair-share what they learned with their partner and write two key features in exercise books
  • CLASSIFYING LOCAL FARMING PRACTICES
  • 3Provide 5 scenario cards: (1) Kwame plants yam this year, cassava next year; (2) Ama grows maize and beans together; (3) Yakubu rotates tomato, onion, and lettuce across three fields; (4) Kofi mixes crops and animals in one farm; (5) Abena uses no synthetic fertiliser—learners sort each into the correct farming system category using the Chart/diagram as reference
  • 4Learners check their answers with a classmate and correct any mismatches using the Science kit/specimens or Textbook to verify
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Science kit/specimens
  • 3Chart/diagram
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Ask one representative from each pair to stand and name one farming system they classified correctly and explain why it fits that category
  • 2Learners show thumbs up if they are confident naming all five systems, thumbs sideways if unsure, thumbs down if they need more help
Exercise
  • 1In your exercise book, list the five farming systems (Land Rotation, Crop Rotation, Mixed Cropping, Mixed Farming, Organic Farming) and write one sentence describing what happens in each
