  • 1Show learners a blank PowerPoint slide on the projector. Ask: What can we add to make this slide more interesting for an audience?
  • 2Display two slides side by side—one text-only, one with images. Ask learners to vote with thumbs which is clearer and why.
  • 3Quick poll: Raise your hand if you have taken a screenshot on your phone or laptop before. What did you use it for?
  • INSERTING PICTURES FROM FILES INTO POWERPOINT
  • 1Open PowerPoint on the projector and create a new slide. Click the Insert tab and point to the Pictures button. Demonstrate clicking 'Pictures' and navigating to a sample image file (e.g., a photo of cocoa farming or a Ghanaian landmark). Show the full steps: Insert > Pictures > Browse > Select file > Insert.
  • 2Distribute laptops. Learners open PowerPoint and create a blank presentation. Ask each learner to insert one picture from the sample folder provided (teacher pre-downloads 5-6 images: Cape Coast Castle, cocoa pods, trotro, market scene, cassava farm, Lake Volta). Circulate to check correct use of Insert tab.
  • 3Once inserted, ask learners to observe the picture. Point out the selection handles (small squares) around the image and explain these are used for resizing. Model dragging a corner handle to resize proportionally.
  • 4Use Ghanaian landmark and crop images to maintain cultural relevance and student engagement.
  • INSERTING SCREENSHOTS AND USING CLIPART
  • 5Demonstrate how to insert a screenshot using Insert > Screenshots. Open a simple webpage (e.g., GES results portal or a news article) in the background, then take a screenshot of it and insert into the slide. Explain when screenshots are useful (e.g., to show a completed online task or evidence of research).
  • 6Show learners how to access ClipArt: Insert > Icons or Illustrations (depending on Office version). Search for a keyword like 'farm' or 'market' and insert a ClipArt image. Explain that ClipArt is a ready-made graphic useful when a real photo is not available.
  • 7Learners try inserting one screenshot and one ClipArt image on their slides. Teacher circulates to support struggling learners and ensure correct navigation through the menus.
  • 8Screenshots and ClipArt introduce variety in image sources; demonstrate both file-based and built-in options.
  • 1Computer/Laptop with PowerPoint installed
  • 2Projector connected to teacher's laptop
  • 3Sample image folder (5-6 Ghanaian landmark/crop photos pre-downloaded)
  • 4Internet connection for ClipArt access
  • 5Textbook reference page on Insert tab features
  • 1Ask learners: Show me one picture you inserted. Which method did you use—file browser, screenshot, or ClipArt? Why?
  • 2Pair-share: Turn to a neighbour and explain in one sentence how to insert a picture from your computer.
Exercise
  • 1Learner task: Open PowerPoint, insert one picture from the sample folder, and write the name of the image file below it. Save the file as YourName_Images.pptx. (Assessment: Can the learner locate and insert a picture successfully?)
