  • 1Recall the names of the seven days of the week in Dagbani
  • 2Ask learners: Which day is today? Raise hands to share. Praise correct responses and repeat the Dagbani name chorally three times
  • THE SEVEN DAYS OF THE WEEK IN DAGBANI
  • 1Write on the board: Zibiya, Samata, Mahini, Mahasuba, Juma, Siɓini, Lahadi. Point to each day slowly and learners repeat chorally after you. Use Textbook during the task. Let learners work in pairs to keep all learners involved
  • 2Play the audio recording (Audio recordings TLR) twice. Learners listen and follow with finger pointing at the textbook (Textbook TLR). Pairs whisper the day names to each other after listening
  • 3Call on one representative from each row to stand and name one day of the week aloud. Rest of class confirms by nodding or raising thumbs up. Use Textbook during the task. Let learners work in pairs to keep all learners involved
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Audio recordings
  • 3Exercise book
  • 1Learners open their exercise books (Exercise book TLR) and copy all seven day names as you write them on the board a second time
  • 2Ask: Who has a name that comes from a day of the week? Volunteers stand and share their name. Class identifies which day it comes from
Exercise
  • 1Write the Dagbani day names in the correct order in your exercise book: Samata, Zibiya, Juma, Mahini, Siɓini, Lahadi, Mahasuba. Then underline the first three days of the week

Apr 2026
  • 1Recall the names of the seven days of the week in Dagbani and identify which day each represents
  • 2Ask learners to whisper the Dagbani day name for their own birth day to their partner; listen for accuracy and correct pronunciation
  • DAY NAMES AND BIRTH DAY NAMING PRACTICE
  • 1Play the audio recording from the Textbook (Track 3: Days and Birth Names); learners listen and point to each day name on the board as you say it aloud in Dagbani. Let learners work in pairs to keep all learners involved
  • 2Write on the board: 'Zuɓ → Zuɓaali (boy), Zuɓuali (girl)'. Explain the pattern: each day name + 'aali' (boy) or 'uali' (girl) = birth day name. Model with two examples: Taanɛ → Taanɛali; Lahinni → Lahinni-uali. Let learners work in pairs to keep all learners involved
  • 3Pairs complete the Exercise Book chart (provided in Learners Resource Pack): write all seven days + their corresponding boy and girl names. Monitor the first three pairs to correct formation errors; fast finishers add one sentence in Dagbani saying which day they were born and their name
  • 1Textbook (Audio Track 3: Days and Birth Names)
  • 2Exercise Book with pre-printed day names chart
  • 3Learners Resource Pack (birth naming guide)
  • 1Ask one representative from each group of four to read one day name and its birth name aloud; class repeats chorally to consolidate pronunciation
  • 2Learners stand in a circle; call out a day name (e.g. 'Juma'); all learners who know someone born on that day say the person's name aloud together
Exercise
  • 1Write the Dagbani day name 'Siɓɓa' on the board and ask: State the boy's name and the girl's name for children born on Siɓɓa. Learners write both names in their Exercise Book
