  • 1Recall the names and basic characteristics of five common social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Twitter, Tumblr)
  • 2Show learners images of the logos of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter on the projector. Ask: Which of these have you seen or used before? Learners raise hands and name the platforms they recognize
  • EXPLORING FIVE MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
  • 1Using the computer and projector, open each platform's website one by one: Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Twitter, and Tumblr. For each, point to the main features on screen and explain: Facebook connects friends and family; LinkedIn connects professionals for job networking; WhatsApp sends messages via the internet; Twitter shares short posts called tweets; Tumblr hosts blogs and reblogged content. Learners write the platform name and one use in their exercise books
  • 2Distribute the Textbook and ask learners to read the section on Social Networking sites (pages provided by teacher). Learners identify and list three purposes for social media in their books: staying in touch, sharing information, and finding job opportunities. Ask a volunteer to read their list aloud and check accuracy against the textbook
  • 3Struggling learners: work with a partner to complete the list using the textbook as a guide; Fast finishers: research and write one additional use for each platform.
  • 1Computer/Laptop
  • 2Projector
  • 3Textbook
  • 4Internet connection
  • 1Display four scenario cards on the projector: (1) Ama wants to find a new job in Accra; (2) Kwame wants to send a quick message to his friend Yaw; (3) Abena wants to share family photos; (4) Kofi wants to read short news updates. Learners call out which platform suits each scenario and explain why
  • 2Learners work in pairs to create a simple comparison chart in their books: two columns with platform name and main purpose. Pairs swap books and check each other's answers using the textbook as the answer key
Exercise
  • 1Name three different social media platforms from the lesson and write one specific use for each. For example: 'Facebook is used to share family photos with relatives.' in their exercise books.
