|
- 1Recall the names and basic functions of common drawing tools used in design and technical communication
- 2Display a collection of drawing instruments (pencils, ruler, compass, set square, drawing board) on a table at the front. Ask learners: Which of these tools have you seen before, and where? Learners whisper their answer to a partner first, then raise hands to share
|
- IDENTIFYING DRAWING MATERIALS, INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT
- 1Distribute the textbook and exercise books to all learners. Display each item one by one (drawing paper, drawing board, T-square, pencils HB and 2B, compass, pair of dividers, rule, set squares). For each item, learners read the name from the textbook, write it in their exercise book, and state one use aloud—for example, 'Drawing paper is used to make drawings on' or 'A compass is used to draw circles.' Record correct uses on the board
- 2Organize learners into six groups. Assign each group one drawing instrument or material from the displayed items (e.g. Group 1: Drawing board, Group 2: T-square). Each group examines their assigned item using the tools and materials provided, discusses its shape and what it is made from, and writes a two-sentence description in their exercise book describing what the item looks like and why that design helps it do its job. A representative from each group reads their description aloud while others check against the textbook
- 3Struggling learners work in pairs with a stronger peer to complete the description; provide a sentence starter: 'This drawing instrument is made of ___ and is used to ___.' Fast finishers sketch their assigned item in their exercise book and label three parts.

- 5T-square
- 6Pencils (HB and 2B)
|
- 1Learners form two lines facing each other. Call out a drawing item (e.g. 'Compass'). The learner at the front of one line states its use in one sentence, then both lines rotate. Repeat for five items to consolidate naming and function
- 2Ask learners to close their eyes and visualize the drawing board and T-square together. Ask: Why would a draughtsman place the T-square on a drawing board? Learners open their eyes and discuss with a partner, then one volunteer explains the connection to the class (the board holds the paper steady so the T-square can draw straight lines accurately)
Exercise
- 1Learners open their exercise books and write the names of five drawing instruments or materials they learned today. Next to each name, they write one sentence explaining what it is used for in design drawing. Mark their answers against the textbook list provided

|
|
- 1Identify drawing materials, instruments, and equipment by name and state their primary uses in design work
- 2Display a tray containing: drawing paper, pencil, T-square, compass, dividers, and ruler. Ask learners to name each item aloud and point to it as it is called out. Learners respond chorally and individually as items are held up
|
- USING AND DEMONSTRATING DRAWING INSTRUMENTS CORRECTLY
- 1Place the textbook open to the page showing correct handling of compass, T-square, and set squares. Learners read the section silently for one minute, then a volunteer reads aloud while you demonstrate each tool's grip and position using the actual instruments and drawing board from the materials provided. Ask: Why do we hold a compass firmly but not squeeze it? Learners respond in pairs and then share one response with the class
- 2Distribute drawing materials (paper, pencil, ruler, compass) to each learner. Instruct: Using your exercise book and the tools provided, draw a straight horizontal line with the ruler, then draw a circle using the compass. As learners work, circulate and observe their grip and technique, providing corrective feedback on hand position and pressure. Ask selected learners to show their work and explain how they held each tool
- 3Struggling learners: provide a pre-drawn circle template and focus on holding the ruler correctly for the line only. Fast finishers: add a task to draw two circles of different sizes and label them.

- 1Textbook (Career Technology)
- 2Drawing materials (drawing paper, pencils, ruler, T-square, compass, dividers)
- 3Drawing board
- 4Exercise books
- 5Tools/materials for practical demonstration
|
- 1Learners place all their drawing materials on their desk in front of them. Call out one instrument at a time (e.g. compass, T-square, dividers); learners pick it up, hold it correctly, and say its name and one use aloud with their partner before setting it down
- 2Ask: If a drawing instrument falls on the floor, should you pick it up and use it immediately? Why or why not? Learners respond: No, because it may be damaged or dirty. Reinforce the rule: always inspect and clean tools before use, and never drop instruments
Exercise
- 1Show Kwame's design task: he needs to draw a perfect square for a carpentry project. Which two instruments should he select and use in order? Learners write the answer in their exercise book and explain in one sentence why each tool is needed
