  • 1Recall different types of small business enterprises and occupations found in your local community.
  • 2Display five pictures of local Ghanaian traders and artisans on the board: a kayayei carrying goods at Makola Market, a seamstress at her shop, a carpenter in his workshop, a chop bar operator, and a fisherman at the beach. Ask learners to name each occupation aloud and write three examples in their exercise books. Call on volunteers to share their answers while you write them on the board.
  • 3Ask learners: Which of these jobs would you like to do? Why? Learners whisper their choice to their partner for 1 minute, then three volunteers share their answers with the class. Affirm all responses and explain that today's lesson will help them explore career pathways that match their skills and interests.
  • UNDERSTANDING CAREER PATHWAYS IN SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISES
  • 1Write on the board: A career pathway is a sequence of jobs and learning that helps you reach your goal. Display three real career examples using the Textbook: (1) Abena started as a market seller at Kejetia Market and now owns a clothing wholesale business; (2) Yakubu began as an apprentice carpenter and now runs a furniture-making enterprise in Kumasi; (3) Ama made tie-and-dye cloth at home and now sells her designs online and at trade fairs. Ask: What did each person do first? Write learners' responses on the board. Explain that each of these is a career pathway — a route to success in business.
  • 2Learners work in pairs and use the Textbook to find one more local example of a small business owner. Each pair writes the owner's name, type of business, and how they started. Invite two pairs to share their examples with the class. Emphasise that career pathways begin with identifying what you are good at and what you like doing.
  • 3Ask learners to list on the board three skills that Abena, Yakubu, or Ama must have had to succeed (e.g. honesty, counting money, time management, communication). Learners copy this list into their exercise books for use in the next section.
  • 4Struggling learners: work with a partner and choose just one person (Abena, Yakubu, or Ama) to focus on throughout this section.
  • MATCHING YOUR SKILLS, INTERESTS, AND VALUES TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
  • 5Hand out one printed self-assessment chart (prepared in advance) to each learner. The chart has three columns: My Top Skills (e.g. I am good with numbers, I like talking to people, I can make things); My Interests (e.g. I like selling, I love farming, I enjoy making clothes); My Values (e.g. I want to help my family, I want to be independent, I want to earn a lot of money). Learners spend 5 minutes writing honestly in each column using the Exercise book. Walk around and ask individual learners: What are you really good at? What makes you happy? Affirm their responses.
  • 6Learners now compare their skills, interests, and values list with the three career pathways from the Textbook (Abena's clothing business, Yakubu's carpentry, Ama's tie-and-dye). They draw lines matching their skills to the pathways: If you have 'I like colours and patterns' and 'I am creative', draw a line to Ama's tie-and-dye business. Learners work in pairs and use a coloured pen to make three connections. One representative from each group shares one connection with the class.
  • 7Ask learners: Which pathway matches YOU best? Why? Learners write 2–3 sentences in their exercise book explaining which of the three pathways (or a different pathway they know) suits their skills, interests, and values most. Use volunteers to read one sentence aloud. Affirm reasoning and highlight how knowing yourself helps you choose the right career.
  • 8Struggling learners: work with a peer and focus on just ONE column (My Top Skills) to identify; teacher provides two sentence starters to complete.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Exercise book
  • 3Printed self-assessment chart (skills, interests, values columns)
  • 4Coloured pens
  • 5Pictures of local traders (kayayei, seamstress, carpenter, chop bar operator, fisherman)
  • 6Whiteboard and markers
  • 1Learners stand in the middle of the room. Call out the three pathways one at a time: 'Clothing business like Abena' — learners who think this suits them move to the left; 'Carpentry like Yakubu' — learners move to the right; 'Tie-and-dye like Ama' — learners stand still. After each round, ask one learner from each group: Why did you choose this pathway? Affirm responses that link back to skills and interests.
  • 2In pairs, learners look at the self-assessment chart they completed and tell their partner: 'One skill I have is... and it matches this career because...' Partners listen and ask one follow-up question. Switch roles after 1 minute. Invite two volunteers to share their partner's career choice with the class.
Exercise
  • 1Write in your exercise book: Name ONE small business career pathway that interests you (e.g. selling kenkey at Madina Market, making kente cloth, running a phone repair shop). List TWO skills you have that would help you succeed in this business. Explain in one sentence why this pathway is a good choice for you.
