  • 1Recall the key steps in a traditional child naming ceremony from prior community knowledge.
  • 2Ask learners: Wobɛ din de3 na eye ade3 bi abuotsu wɔ ɔman yi? (What naming process do you know in your community?) — learners whisper answers to their partner.
  • 3Display three pictures (outdooring, blessing, gift-giving) on the board — learners point and name each step aloud in Nzema.
  • UNDERSTANDING THE NAMING PROCESS
  • 1Play the audio recording from the Textbook showing a traditional naming ceremony dialogue between Ama's grandmother and the family — learners follow in the Learners Resource Pack and list three things they heard (outdooring, invitation of ancestors, giving the name).
  • 2Read aloud from the Textbook: 'Adinkra sɛ: Abuotsu yɛ ade3 bi a3ba ma abɔfoɔ' (A naming ceremony is a gift for the family) — learners repeat chorally three times.
  • 3Ask: Ɔba la3 din ade3 a yɛ din ɔba no la3? (What is the name given to the child during this process?) — learners write their answer in Exercise book.
  • IDENTIFYING ITEMS USED IN THE NAMING CEREMONY
  • 4Display a chart showing items: Water, Basket, Beads, Powder, Lantern, Clothes — read each aloud: 'Nsuman a wɔfa to abuotsu de3 mu' (Things used in the naming ceremony).
  • 5Learners match each item to its use using the Textbook exemplars — write pairs in Exercise book (e.g. Water = purification, Beads = protection).
  • 6Call on one representative from each pair to share one matched item aloud to the class.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Audio recordings
  • 3Exercise book
  • 1Learners work in pairs and arrange four sequence cards (from Textbook) showing: Outdooring → Invitation of Ancestors → Naming → Blessing — discuss why order matters.
  • 2A volunteer comes to the board and draws one item used in naming (water, basket, or beads) while class guesses in Nzema.
Exercise
  • 1Write in your Exercise book: Adinkra abuotsu de3 mu, ade3 bi na wɔfa to mu — name two items and explain their meaning in the ceremony.
