  • 1Recall different writing modes and identify their key characteristics based on purpose and audience
  • 2Display three short text samples on the board: a text message to a friend, a letter to a headmaster, and a newspaper article about a school event. Ask learners: What is different about how each one is written? Learners discuss in pairs
  • RECOGNISING WRITING MODES FOR DIFFERENT CONTEXTS
  • 1Write on the board: FORMAL (letter to authority), INFORMAL (text to friend), NARRATIVE (story), DESCRIPTIVE (painting a picture with words). Read each mode aloud using the Textbook examples. Ask learners to repeat each mode chorally three times, then copy into their Exercise books with one-word meaning for each
  • 2Provide three scenarios written on cards: (1) Yaw writes to the District Director about a school project, (2) Efua texts her classmate about homework, (3) Kofi writes a story about a market visit. Give pairs one card each. Pairs match their scenario to one of the four writing modes using the Reading materials provided, then a volunteer from each pair shares their match with the class
  • 3Struggling learners: provide a matching chart with mode names and definitions pre-written; they tick the correct mode for their scenario.
