  • 1Recall the meaning of synonyms and antonyms using familiar Ghanaian words
  • 2Ask learners: Name a word that means the same as 'happy' and a word that means the opposite; write three responses on the board
  • IDENTIFYING SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS IN CONTEXT
  • 1Write on board: 'Ama is a brave girl. She is not ___.' Ask learners to use the Dictionary to find antonyms (cowardly, fearful) and write them in their Exercise book
  • 2Provide a short passage from the Textbook about Kofi selling goods at Makola Market. Learners identify two synonym pairs (e.g. 'sell'/'trade', 'quick'/'fast') and two antonym pairs (e.g. 'expensive'/'cheap', 'buy'/'sell') in their books
  • 3Call on pairs to share one synonym and one antonym they found; confirm accuracy and write correct examples on the board for reference. Use Textbook during the task
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Dictionary
  • 3Exercise book
  • 4Whiteboard and marker
  • 1Learners stand and respond chorally to quick prompts: 'Say a synonym for angry' and 'Say an antonym for sad'—three rounds
  • 2Ask three volunteers to each use a different synonym for 'intelligent' in a sentence about a Ghanaian student and read aloud
Exercise
  • 1Write one synonym and one antonym for the word 'difficult' and use each in a sentence about a classroom task in their exercise books.

  • 1Identify cohesive devices (connectors, pronouns, repeated vocabulary) that link sentences within a paragraph
  • 2Display this paragraph on the board: 'Ama went to Makola Market. She bought yams and plantains. The yams were fresh. She carried them home in her basket.' Ask: Which word tells us Ama is buying things? Circle 'She' and 'them' — what do these words do?
  • USING CONNECTORS AND PRONOUNS TO LINK SENTENCES
  • 1Write on the board: 'Kofi planted cassava. _____ the soil was wet, the seeds grew quickly.' Read the Textbook example of time and reason connectors (page reference if available). Call on learners to fill the blank with 'Because' or 'Since' and explain why. Confirm: because/since join the reason to the result
  • 2Distribute the Reading Materials with a 3-sentence passage about a fisherman. Learners underline all connectors (and, but, when, so) and circle all pronouns (he, his, him, it, they). Pairs check each other's work using the Dictionary to verify word types if unsure
  • 3Learners open Exercise Books and rewrite the passage, adding one connector (because, although, or when) between two sentences and replacing a noun with a pronoun to make it flow smoothly
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Reading Materials
  • 3Dictionary
  • 4Exercise Book
  • 1A volunteer reads their rewritten sentence aloud while others follow in their Exercise Books; class gives thumbs up if the connector and pronoun make sense
  • 2Learners whisper one connector word they used today to their partner, then one partner shares aloud for the class to hear
Exercise
  • 1Write one paragraph (4–5 sentences) about a visit to Cape Coast Market, using at least two different connectors (and, because, when, so) and at least two pronouns (he, she, they, it) to link your sentences together in their exercise books.
