  • 1Identify the difference between active and passive voice sentences by examining who performs the action
  • 2Write on the board: 'Ama bought rice at Makola Market' and 'Rice was bought at Makola Market.' Ask learners to point out who performs the action in each sentence and whisper their answer to their partner
  • UNDERSTANDING ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE STRUCTURES
  • 1Write the formula on the board: Active = Subject + Verb + Object (e.g. 'The fisherman caught three fish'). Then show the passive form: Object + 'was/were' + past participle + 'by' + subject (e.g. 'Three fish were caught by the fisherman'). Ask one representative from each group to read aloud both sentences from the board and identify which is active and which is passive. Use Textbook during the task.
  • 2Provide each pair with the Textbook section on active and passive voice. Pairs identify five examples of active sentences in the reading materials and rewrite two of them in passive form, checking their work against the Dictionary definition of passive voice if needed. Select a learner who found this easy to write their passive sentence on the board for class review
  • 3Struggling learners: work with the teacher-provided sentence frames (Subject + 'was' + verb + 'by' + agent) and convert only the first two examples.
  • 1Textbook
  • 2Dictionary
  • 3Reading materials
  • 4Exercise book
  • 1Learners work in pairs to create one sentence about a market scenario (e.g. 'The market women sold vegetables at dawn') and convert it to passive voice. One pair from each row shares their passive sentence aloud; class listens for correct verb form and word order
  • 2Ask learners to show thumbs up if the passive sentence 'The school was visited by the District Officer' is correct, thumbs down if incorrect. Call on a learner who disagrees to explain why the verb form or word order might need checking
Exercise
  • 1Rewrite this active sentence in passive voice: 'Yakubu delivered the examination papers to the school on Friday.' Write your answer in your exercise book in one complete sentence
